A male was killed and a New Smyrna Beach law enforcement officer was injured throughout a shooting on Saturday afternoon, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Workplace.
The officer was shot by the male who got away from authorities, and then the leaving male was shot and killed by a New Smyrna Beach law enforcement officer and Volusia County deputy who returned fire, according to deputies.
The occurrence started around 4 p.m. when a Port Orange law enforcement officer attempted to stop the male for a traffic offense after he was driving recklessly at a high speed, deputies stated.
The male then drove towards New Smyrna Beach, where he crashed outside a storage facility in the location of Turnbull Street and Industrial Park Opportunity, deputies stated.
The male then got away on foot and started shooting at authorities from the roof of a storage facility, deputies stated.
In a telephone call, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood stated the injured officer was shot in the buttocks.
The officer is recuperating at a healthcare facility and was reportedly in great spirits with his household at his side, deputies stated.
Chitwood stated the male, whose name hasn’t been released yet, had actually been arrested 25 times.
